Not by a long shot! This special treatment is exclusively for those privileged few who retire at the exalted stations of the highest echelons of service in agencies under the Ministry of Interior.
The official reason – and I relay this without a wink – is to prevent these distinguished individuals from facing financial hardship. Imagine that! As if a senior officer with years of access to power would be reduced to begging.
This curious policy comes alongside other reforms including clearing a pile of over 50,000 pending promotions and establishing what they're calling a "world-class Fire Academy" to match the one in Arizona. Development proceeds, or so they tell us.
Throughout my observations of administrations devise ways to reward their own, but this lifetime salary arrangement takes the cake. One must wonder: Why not extend such magnanimity to all public servants? Or better yet, to the common citizens whose taxes fund these benefits?
The difference with other public servants remains plain as day. Many a police retiree still languish patiently for retirement funds that barely cover basic needs.
